Ellen was working as a waitress, and she was also trying to be everything her daughter, Kiara needs in her life.
Ellen would know what people want, as she was working as a waitress for long years. She would know a person’s needs when they enters the restaurant she was working, and she would know what her daughter needs too.

Kiara was a fourteen-year-old girl. She was a sweet, innocent girl until adolescence started. The teenager became acting and behaving terribly. Being a daughter of a waitress mother and an electrician father was embarrassing for her.
She wanted her parents to be rich, as she was embarrassed that her parents were working hard to see the end of the month.
Kiara was not a grateful kid, as her parents were working hard for her to live comfortably. For the gifts she would receive for her birthdays and other holidays, she would throw a tantrum, and slam her bedroom door as she would yell, “I don’t want to see you!”
As the parents, Ellen and Joe would hurt from their daughter’s behaviour, they were also aware that she was in her teens and it was normal for her to act that way during that period. They were willing to do whatever their daughter would need.

But Kiara and her husband, Joe were missing their daughter, who would help preparing the breakfast, and help with house works.
“Sorry, Mommy,” she would used to say, after she makes a mistake.
Ellen would lift her daughter up, and kiss her as she would say that it is alright to make mistakes.
For her birthday, she dropped another bomb that time. “Mom,” she started, “I really want a handbag. A fancy one that Sophie’s parents bought for her on her birthday. All the girls are asking their parents for it. It’s going to be our thing.”
Kiara was expecting something incredibly expensive. To buy the gift their daughter would like, they would spend their monthly income just for one bag.
As Ellen and her husband were thinking about what to do, “Mom,” Kiara said one day, “How’s the birthday present coming along? The handbag, right?”
“Honey, you know we can’t afford that. We just don’t have that kind of money lying around. Isn’t there something else you’d like?”

“No! You promised!” Kiara shouted, “You said you would help me fit in with the girls at school. It’s not my fault that you chose this life for us! Come on, Ellen.”
She was calling the names of her parents when she gets mad, and that was annoying for her parents.
“Kia,” Ellen said, “Life’s circumstances have led to this. Your father and I try our best, so you must be grateful for everything we do.”
As she stared down at her mother, she left later. The shutting of her door of her room was heard from the kitchen.
As Ellen had enough, she planned to gave her daughter a lesson. For Kiara’s birthday, she prepared a cake and a gift at the table. As her husband was working, Ellen pretended that she needs to work too. She only wanted to see her daughter’s reaction for the gift.
As they cut from their savings, they bought the bag for their daughter. As Ellen heard her daughter from her room, she shouted as she wore her uniform. “Kiara, I’m leaving! See you later!”
Then she went to the other side of the house, and hide. She was looking through the window of their living room.

Kiara went downstairs, and looked at the gift, and the note. It was written, “Happy Birthday, Kia. We love you, and we’re sorry that we couldn’t be there to celebrate with you. Your birthday present meant we had to work extra hours to pay for it. Love, Mom and Dad.”
Then they left her alone for the rest of the day. Ellen went to the house of her neighbor to wait.
At the evening, she returned back home, and they were at the dinner table. They witness the change of their daughter. She got her bag, but that costed her to spent her birthday alone.
“Mom,” Kiara said, as they were eating, “You can return the handbag.”
“Why would we do that?” Joe asked that as he was surprised.
“Because as much as I love it, and I do. I really do. But it’s not worth being alone on my birthday because you have to work to pay it off. It’s not fair to you both, and I’m sorry.”
